Reading- We will complete our Civil War novels.

Language- We will be working on prepositions.

I can’t believe that we are starting the last week of school. The students have worked hard this year and learned a lot! Thank you for your encouragement and support to your child and me. This has been a great group of 5th graders to work with. Have a wonderful summer and MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD READS!!!

May 11th-15th

Reading- We will continue reading our Civil War novels and do related activities.

Language- We will be continuing with a Cumulative review of what we have learned this year. When we complete the review, we will begin prepositions.

Tuesday, we will have a special speaker who will discuss the Civil War era. Also, Friday afternoon is Field Day. Please have your child dress comfortably and use sunscreen if needed.

May 4th-8th

Reading- We finished the American Revolution and are beginning the Civil War! We will be reading historical novels from the Civil War era. The students will learn about that time in our history, though we will be reading fiction.

Language- Among field trips, assemblies, and special events, we will be doing a cumulative review of what we have learned throughout the year.

Have a great week–and remind your child that school is still in session with more to learn!

Reading- We are continuing in the booklet Seeds of Revolution about events leading to the American Revolution. The students are writing in their response journals about what we learn in the book. We will also answer comprehension questions over what we have read about.

Language- We will be finishing adverbs and negatives, as well as working on a unit check-up. Later this week, we will discuss homographs and homophones.

I was so pleased with the Fine Arts Fair entries. We have some very creative students this year!

Please encourage your child to “finish strong”. Some of the students seem to have Spring Fever and may not be giving their best effort.

What a relief! MAP testing is over, and I am proud of the students who worked hard to do their best! We look forward to the cookout Friday to celebrate.

Reading- We will begin Seeds of Revolution to help kick off the study of the American Revolution. This booklet is about how the revolution began. It will be a nice change from the fiction we have been reading.

Language- We will make final revisions on poetry that we have written. We will also continue working with adverbs.

This week we will be taking the M.A.P. tests. They are scheduled as follows: Tuesday-Communication Arts, Wednesday-Math, and Thursday-Science. On Monday and Friday, we will work on our Poetry Unit.

It is especially important that your child gets adequate sleep and a healthy breakfast this week. Thank you for your help in this!! Have a great week.

Reading- This week we will be working on MAP skills, complete a short biography of Ben Franklin and begin a poetry unit. Hopefully, we will be able to write some poetry on Wed. and Thurs.

Language- We completed our work with adjectives last week with an open book quiz on Friday. This week we will begin to work with adverbs.

Remember- No school on Friday for Easter Break. Also, next Tuesday-Thursday is MAP testing.

I hope you had a wonderful, restful Spring Break! We’re back and it’s time to go “full speed ahead” to finish the year well.

Reading- We have finished our Realistic Fiction books and are working on the culminating activities. This week, we will finish our brochures for the book we read and work in our Reading Response Journals. We will also continue will main idea skills.

Language-We are working with adjectives this week-comparing, and learning the special forms of adjectives.

Reading- After working on MAP skills on Monday and going to the Library on Tuesday, we will be concentrating on completing our Realistic Fiction books. When finished, we will have culminating activities for each group book. We will also continue working on main idea and details this week.

Language- We completed our resturaunt menus using all kinds of “delicious” adjectives. We will continue with adjectives by learning to compare.

Spring Break begins next Tuesday. Remember–Monday is to make up for a missed snow day!

Reading: We will be working on finding main idea and details this week. The students seem to be enjoying their realistic fiction novels. We will continue reading and doing activities related to the novels. Monday will be spent on testing strategies to prepare students for MAP testing. These skills should also help them on any test they take.

Language: We are continuing to work with different types of adjectives this week. We will use what we learn to create our own menu describing different types of food.

Note: It is almost impossible to believe that Tuesday is the beginning of the 4th Quarter. The year has flown by! Please encourage your child to not let up these last weeks of school. We still have much to learn and want to finish strong!
